Pottery by the Park

Sunday, September 27th
Wortendyke Studio
211 Greenwood Ave., Midland Park, NJ

Join us for a fun day as we create pottery under tents outside of the
Wortendyke Studio’s historic Pullman train car and station.

Looking to channel your creativity? Need some new activities in your life? Grab some friends and head over to the Wortendyke Studio. We’re bringing the clay and instruction outside by offering a series of 3 hand-building projects for new and aspiring potters. Each project uses one of the three core hand-building techniques: pinch pot, slab, and coil. Hop aboard our express train to learn the fundamentals of pottery!

All projects are designed for a beginning student, and there will be instructors on hand to help, so you can choose to create any or all of the projects that you’d like. Descriptions and pricing for each project are below.

Depending on the number of attendees, we will plan to set up under tents in the parking lot in front of the Wortendyke Studio’s historic Pullman train car. Despite being outside, Social Distancing guidelines must be followed and masks must be worn at all times. If registering as a family or with friends, please let us know so that we can position you together.

Pricing: (per adult, or adult working with child)
1 project = $40
2 projects = $38 each ($76)
3 projects = $35 each ($105)

* All materials and instruction are included
* Pieces will be left at the studio to be fired and glazed and will be ready for pick up approximately 3-4 weeks after the event.

To Register, please submit the Registration Form and submit your payment (check or cash) to confirm. Please note which project(s) you would like to create in the box for “Class or Workshop”. Payments can be dropped off in person at the studio (please drop through the mail slot of the door if we are closed), or if there is time, you can mail it to:

SCHEDULE

* NOTE: In the event of inclement weather, the alternate rain date will be the following Sunday, October 4, 2020.

Sunday, September 27th

10:00am – 12:00pm Project 1: pinch pot pumpkin
Starting out with the first technique that is generally a beginning potter’s introduction to clay – the pinch pot – the objective for this project is to create 2 similarly shaped pinch pots that will be attached together to create a closed form. We will demonstrate how to create a decorative pumpkin for the Fall holidays, however, the body of the piece can be adapted to wherever your mind takes you, from a small piggy bank, lidded pot, or the abstract.
12:30pm – 2:30pm Project 2: slab mug
Another slab method project, however, this one incorporates more construction with addition of a handle and base. The creativity will be in the stamped or carved textures that you add to make it your own favorite personalized mug!
3:00pm – 5:30pm Project 3: coil bud vase
Get creative by stacking and joining various swirls and shapes with long coils to create organic movement in your piece. This project is quite versatile for design and shape, but we will demo a bud vase, approximately 6” tall and 2-3” diameter. You can decide, however, to make it wider and shorter for a cup or pencil holder.
